Background
Tonno was raised in the hobgoblin camps leading a relatively unremarkable life until he reached the age of 12 when he began hearing the voice of Alden in his head. Exactly who or what Alden is, has yet to be revealed, but the so far Alden has only been able to communicate with Tonno, and it appears Alden has forgotten much of who he is. Even though Alden was persistent in appealing to Tonno for help, Tonno had successfully ignored him until an autumn day when he was 14.
Tonno had decided to relieve himself that morning by urinating from his window to the alley below. An unaware hobgoblin in the alley turned a blind corner and caught the stream fully in the face. Enraged, he began to chase Tonno. Fearing for his life, Tonno fled, but it was apparent he would not be able to out run the hobgoblin. Alden leveraged this moment to offer Tonno a deal. "Tonno, I can help you. Listen to me, please! If you promise to help me, then I will help you. You can yet live through the day." Tonno agreed, and following Alden's instruction, he swore an oath to help the voice re-discover who he was, and what he had forgotten. In return, Alden would lend the goblin his power. With the magic granted by the Pact Tonno was able to disguise himself and evade the hobgoblin.
Tonno enjoyed his newfound abilities, and at first eagerly worked to help Alden so that he could discover new abilities. So far they have discovered two ways that they have been able to help restore parts of Alden's memory: (1) growing Tonno's magical abilities, and (2) by learning either through research, instruction, or observation. Being shown or taught by others has seemed to be particularly effective.
About a year after forming the Pact, progress had slowed tremendously, and Tonno became tired of the work involved. He decided to give up on the Oath, believing he could live comfortably within the camp with the magical prowess he had obtained so far. Alden objected, telling Tonno that they had to keep on, but he was ignored. After a week of living comfortably, Tonno's health took a turn for the worse. It started to cough up blood, and was sapped of his physical strength. Alden's voice also became much more faint. Tonno blamed Alden, believing that he was causing his health to deteriorate, which Alden disputed. "... this is not my doing. It... must be a result of our Pact. ... Whether we like it or not... we are now bound. I need you, Tonno. I... would not dare hurt you."
Tonno then resolved to begin practicing again, as difficult as it was with his weakened condition. After several days, he noticed a small improvement, but his stamina was running out. It is at this point that he was taken in by Nezznar, the Black Spider. Nezznar had Tonno nursed back to health, and began to teach him, grooming him to become a capable servant.
In-game
Tonno had just returned to the goblin camps after running another of the Spider's errands when he heard news of her death. A visiting Seymore Swindleheist, told the story about Nezznar's fate, and about the Only Rumors adventuring company who had defeated her. Tonno decided to travel with Seymour for a time, accompanying him to Phandolin. He wanted to discover the people who were strong enough to have killed the Black Spider, wondering if perhaps one among them could be a new mentor, or, if perhaps he should avenge his old one. He ends up tracing much of the Rumor's steps, interacting with various NPCs who have dealt with the party, as summarized below.
Seymour first introduced Tonno to Sildar Hallwinter. Sildar, a Predicator of the Divine Order, tells Tonno that from here the Rumours had headed east. A few days in, Tonno bumped into a small group of dark skinned elves from the Maudine Desert to the south. They are pilgrims; missionaries sent from the new Prophet Faidh Rasul to preach the new truth of the Gods to the lands northward. Continuing east, Tonno came across a little village called Tilhoan, with some very nice hillbillies living there. He spends a bit of time to learn that they are mostly human with a bit of hobgoblin, and are down to earth and sweet. They remember the Rumours coming through and point Tonno in the right direction. They warn him of “The Hole” along the way. Tonno reaches “the hole” a few days later. It’s a huge gash cut into the earth, 50’ wide and deep, and miles long. Like an enormous claw had ripped the earth apart. In the very center of the hole lay an enormous pyramid, which seems incredibly odd. While investigating the exterior, Tonno was greeted by a talking squirrel, who convinced Tonno to help him remove a rock from a tree that was blocking his nut collection. Upon removing the rock, a beehive fell on Tonno's head and the squirrels laughed hysterically for several minutes before turning into a Satyr and introducing himself as Rakanishu. Rakanishu turns out to be a fairly powerful Druid who knows where the Rumours are, and after using some scrying magic he teleports Tonno to the road ahead of them.
Tonno found himself on the road surrounded by statues, and was almost immediately waylaid by a group of lizard men who succeeded in petrifying Tonno with their coated arrows. The Rumours then found Tonno, and, being the most fresh and peculiar of all the statues, decided to revive him. The group is then attacked by the lizard men, and Tonno helps to fight them off. Though in doing so he casts a spell which opens a small rift to another plane where a mass of tentacles emerge, accompanied by unnerving whispers in an unknown language. This spell upsets many members of the Rumours, who had just had a brush with such a creature. Tonno apologizes profusely, claiming he only was trying to help, and that he has been searching for the party in hopes of joining them. The situation remains somewhat tense, but the Rumours allow Tonno to travel with them to Fallidun.
Relationships
Zoop Timbers
Zoop has so far not shown any hostility to Tonno. Shortly after joining the party, they have a chat where Zoop asks what Tonno's goals are. He explains how he needs to get stronger, or else "bad things will happen". Zoop offers to be there for Tonno if he ever needs to talk, which Tonno appreciates. After a tense confrontation with Anima, Zoop asks Tonno what he knows about the bind. Upon hearing Tonno and Alden's resposne, she takes an interest in Alden, asking if they know just what he is. Is he a lost God looking to recover his divinity? is he a powerful being stifled by the removal of the Bind, looking to get it back? Tonno explains that they don't know, but they believe Alden is inherently good.
Anima of Doriath
Tonno started off with a favorable impression of Anima, however, early in their time together the relationship was strained. Knowing that Tonno was connected to Nezznar, Anima begins to probe Tonno further on this connection. What did he do for the Spider? What are his true goals? Can Anima trust Tonno, or will he try to use her? Anima uses the spell detect thoughts, and, when Tonno catches on to this and tries to leave, she restrains him with hold person. Tonno, clearly upset at being forcefully interrogated, answers all of the questions. When Anima is satisfied and leaves to be alone, Tonno rejoins the party at breakfast. Later that night, Anima comes to explain herself, which is informative to Tonno on the type of person Anima is, but doesn't cure the bitter aftertaste of the day's events.
